24th July
...On Friday I expect you to have completed the
research and by Monday be able to present to the team what you have learned
from this process and have completed the models. You will have the opportunity
of going in greater detail of research later in your individual projects.
As I have mentioned before, out of the
conversations about the site/history/building type etc and the themes explored
in the brief - and indeed in today’s video on Carlo Scarpa – should come the
soul of your project. In other words what your project is about beyond being
about the re-use of a building and a theatre. Your design concept will most
likely come out of these explorations and could be a reflection of some of the
themes discussed today, including, but certainly not limited to, the following:
·
The nature of materials
(choice of main material and its exploration)· The coupling of opposites (precious/humble; pure/impure; light/shadow; container/contained and so on…)
· Responding to fragments/ruins
· New forms with old techniques or vernacular materials
· The stage and staging (what is a stage?)
· Physical fiction and representation in theatre (i.e. scenography)
· The power of the detail – the human scale
· The processional nature of theatre spaces
· Architecture of all the senses (what does your building smell like?)
· The process of renewal and the beauty of decay
· Weather and weathering (harnessing nature as designer-in-chief)
· The dialectics between performers and audience (what if there are no boundaries?)
· Insertion and detachment (of materials, spaces, volumes, people…)
· Absence and presence (how to represent physical and emotional loss or void)
· Virtual theatre and real performance (connective possibilities)
...Your project will, however,
need to explore memory and identity as this is the theme of this studio;
it will also have to work with the existing context. ...
Below is the schedule for seeing you
